---Story---

Rome was living up to his nickname of 'jerkface' today. It seemed like no matter what Lillian did with him, whether it just be tying him up to the tie rail or giving him a bath he made a big fuss of things. She knew he could feel the excitement in the air, not to mention there were mares everywhere, but she expected him to have better manners than this. While brushing out his tail he had kicked out at her twice, and she barely escaped the second attempt, so she decided his tail would go unbraided for the day. It was banged at his fetlocks and looked nice enough, anyway.

While tacking him up she cooed to the big stallion, although, she rather felt like giving him a few choice words, but that never made matters any better. It was best to keep your cool around horses, especially ones as temperamental as Rome. She could tell he listened to her soothing voice, his ears were always plastered backwards on his skull, but this time they swiveled with her murmurs and she smiled at him. "You're not all bad are you, big boy? Just admit it, you love me...secretly." She said with a small giggle and scratched his neck which he stretched it out a bit in pleasure, lips twitching. Then, like he realized he had given her a moment of satisfaction, he snapped his neck back up and tightened his mouth into a hard line once again and Lillian just sighed and rolled her eyes.

The nerves were starting to hit her as she led him to the warm-up arena and the big stallion jigged beside her, causing a fuss and being a general annoyance every time a mare passed by them. She muttered a few 'Sorry's and everyone seemed to give her and the big, grey brute a wide berth. Finally at the warm up jumps, she lifted herself into the saddle, Scolding him with an 'Ah Ah!' as he swung his butt around while she still had one foot out of the stirrup. While she adjusted herself in the saddle and gathered her reins a charcoal grey leg struck out and dug up the ground underneath it, pawing impatiently. "Rome...buddy..I love you, but if you keep this up you and I are going to have some issues." She said with an exasperated tone to her voice and pushed him into a walk.

Warm up was going good, the grey beginning to relax and let out a bit of his tension and pent up energy, so she decided to point him at a few jumps. She took the smallest one, first, and he charged the second he noticed what they were doing. She had to hold him firmly and slow his strides as he approached and his big neck bent in, his chin practically resting on his broad chest before he took the jump. He soared over it easily, but when they landed he flung his head down, the reins ripping through her hands and he let out a few big bucks. She clenched her jaw, but she was used to this from him, and she rode it the best she could, losing one stirrup in the process. Her years of experience on 'problem' horses helped her deal with this particular stallion's antics since most couldn't. Pulling to one side she urged him on with her calves and he bent into a circle, forcing his head back up and he snorted stubbornly about losing their little quarrel.

She didn't let him rest after his fit, instead, pushing him into a working trot. The other riders in the arena, she noticed, were nonchalantly keeping their distance and she sighed. "No wonder you don't have any friends, Rome. You're a jerk." She said under her breath and pointed him at the same jump as before. This was going to be an interesting competition

Wow I just love the shading on the horse. It's so detailed I just can't stop looking at it, discovering even MORE details!:la:
